Even with good oral hygiene, teeth extractions are sometimes a necessary procedure. At Dental Town, our experienced dental team offers teeth extractions to serve our Chicago patients in times of need. We also offer wisdom tooth removals for adults and teens. For prompt extraction services, you can trust Dental Town.

Do I Need An Extraction?

Your trusted local Dental Town team always strives to restore damaged teeth and keep your smile intact. However, situations arise that prompt the removal of a tooth. This may be caused by one of the following:

  • Dental trauma
  • Severe tooth decay
  • Crowding
  • Infection
  • Advanced periodontal disease
  • Impaction (common with wisdom teeth)

If you experience any of these conditions, your dentist may recommend an extraction.

Extractions are typically performed as a last resort when other treatments fail. Our team will do everything we can to save and repair your teeth through restorative procedures, such as fillings, crowns, or root canals. If your tooth can’t be saved, your dentist will recommend extraction, and we will schedule the procedure as soon as possible.

What Can I Expect During A Tooth Extraction?

Before pulling your tooth, your dentist will administer local anesthesia to the extraction site. This will numb your tooth and prevent any discomfort. You may experience slight pressure during your extraction, but we will do everything we can to make you comfortable before and during your procedure.

If your tooth is impacted, which is commonly associated with wisdom teeth, our dentist will make small incisions into the bone and gum tissue to expose the tooth. Next, your dentist will use forceps to grasp your tooth and gently loosen it from the socket. A hard-to-pull tooth may be broken and extracted in pieces. The debris will then be removed. In the case of a simple extraction, your dentist will use forceps to remove the tooth from its socket.

Once your tooth is removed from your mouth, the treatment site is cleaned of any debris. Your dentist will pack a gauze pad inside the socket and have you bite down on it for 30-45 minutes. This will help stop the bleeding and promote the development of a blood clot inside the socket. If necessary, your dentist will replace a small suture over the extraction site to close it and help promote healing.

Post-operative Instructions

  • Be sure to relax for at least 24 hours after your extraction. Limit activity for the next 1-2 days while your mouth heals.
  • Avoid rinsing and drinking from a straw for the first 24 hours after the extraction. This could dislodge the clot from the socket.
  • After 24 hours, you can rinse with your mouth with a solution made of 1/2 teaspoon of salt and eight ounces of warm water.
  • Don’t smoke or use chewing tobacco.
  • Eat soft foods, such as soup, pudding, yogurt, or applesauce for 1-2 days.
  • Continue to brush and floss your teeth but be sure to avoid the extraction site.
