This can usually be accomplished through excellent oral hygiene, regular checkups and preventive treatments like supplemental fluoride applications.

Fluoride is a natural mineral which is known for its benefits to dental health. Fluoride is found in water, some foods, and in some dental products like mouth rinses and toothpaste. Fluoride will protect teeth against cavities and can even repair decay in its very early stages. It works by promoting the restoration of minerals back into the teeth.

At Bedford Dental, we provide topical fluoride treatments through a professional-strength varnish applied directly to the teeth. For our younger patients, and for adults who at a higher risk of decay, fluoride treatments are an excellent tool for boosting the resistance and strength of teeth against dental cavities.

Fluoride is also highly recommended for those who are going through orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic appliances will make your teeth more susceptible to cavities and decay because cleaning will be more challenging.

Fluoride is recommended for multiple reasons, which include:

  • Limited saliva flow
  • Prior tooth decay history
  • Excessive sugar intake
  • Limited fluoride access
  • Inadequate oral hygiene
  • Preventing decay
  • Protecting roots

Fluoride will enhance the resistance of your teeth against plaque, bacteria, and acid attacks, but it is not a replacement for excellent oral hygiene. Always remember to brush at least twice a day and floss daily.
