Do I Need an Extraction?

Your trusted local Dental Town team always works to save your natural teeth. However, there are times when an extraction might be required. This may be caused by dental trauma, tooth decay, crowding, infection, or advanced periodontal disease. If you experience any of these conditions, you may require an extraction.

Extraction is typically viewed as a last resort. Our team will do everything we can to repair your teeth through restorative treatments, such as fillings, crowns, or root canals. If your tooth can’t be saved, our dentist will recommend extraction.

What Can I Expect During a Tooth Extraction?

Before pulling your tooth, our dentist will provide local anesthesia to numb your mouth and prevent any discomfort. You may experience slight pressure, but we will do everything we can to make you comfortable before your procedure.

If your tooth is impacted, our dentist will cut out bone and gum tissue, which covers the tooth. Next, our dentist will use forceps to grasp your tooth and softly loosen it from your jaw. A hard-to-pull tooth sometimes must be broken and extracted in pieces. In the case of a simple extraction, our dentist will use forceps to remove it from the socket gently.

Once your tooth is removed, a blood clot will form inside the socket. Our dentist will pack a gauze pad inside the socket and have you bite down on it to help stop the bleeding. If necessary, our dentist will replace a small suture over the extraction site to close it and promote healing.

Do Extractions Hurt?

Typically, an extraction is a simple and straightforward procedure. We use local anesthesia to make our dental extractions as painless as possible. However, our team understands that it is a serious procedure and this can cause anxiety for many patients. Be sure to ask about the amenities and comfort aids we offer to help our patients relax. Our team is dedicated to your comfort and well-being.
