What Are Orthodontics?

Orthodontics are a form of dental treatments designed to address issues with tooth alignment. They can have both practical and cosmetic benefits. For many patients, orthodontics are recommended to help address issues with bite alignment that could lead to other issues. Some things that orthodontics can help solve include:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Underbite
  • Overbite
  • Open bite

Getting braces at any age can help improve both the appearance of your smile as well as how your teeth and jaw function. Braces can also help address issues with crowded teeth and make it easier to brush and floss your teeth. What Are Traditional Braces?

Traditional braces are the tried-and-true orthodontic treatment for patients of all ages. Made from metal brackets and wires, braces apply pressure to your teeth. This pressure slowly guides your bite into the desired alignment over the course of your treatment. Braces are recommended for children, teens, and adults who present with complex orthodontic issues that can’t be corrected with clear aligners like Invisalign or ClearCorrect. One of the drawbacks of traditional metal braces is that they are not removable. Because of this, there are often recommended foods you cannot eat when you have braces, and it can be more difficult to brush and floss. For these reasons, many adults look into removable options like clear aligners.

What Are Clear Aligners?

When it comes to straightening smiles, metal braces are no longer the only option for adults and teens. Clear aligners use a series of custom-made aligners trays. Your aligner trays are made using the latest technology to ensure precise treatment. Aligners quickly move the teeth, and once one pair of aligners is done (usually 2-3 weeks), you can receive your next set. Patients will go through a few sets of aligners before finishing their dental treatment.

Because your aligners are removable, you can take them out during meals or social events. That said, in order for the treatment to be effective it is important to wear the aligners for the recommended minimum time per day. Your dentist here at Dental Town can provide more information about both clear aligners as well as traditional braces and how to get the best orthodontic results.
