Although patients often have many questions about veneers from whether or not they are safe to whether or not they are permanent. In this article, we will discuss dental veneers, how they work, and the different types of veneers. What Are Removable Dental Veneers?
Traditional dental veneers are permanently attached to your teeth. Because of this, they can only be removed by a dentist or by accident. Removable veneers are different from temporary veneers. Temporary veneers are sort of “one-size-fits-all” veneers that come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. A dentist would match one of these premade veneers to your teeth and place it on the tooth until a custom veneer can be manufactured. These veneers would then be removed and replaced with the custom veneers. Both the temporary and the permanent veneer would be attached to the tooth via dental bonding. This means the veneer cannot and should not be removed at home. Removable veneers, also called snap-on veneers, are a completely different setup. Removable veneers are placed into the mouth and removed the same way a mouth guard, grind guard, or removable retainer can be easily put in or taken out. These are rare and not every dentist recommends them or uses them. Traditionally, most dentists who provide cosmetic services use permanent and temporary veneers only.
Benefits of Permanent Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. They require very little to be done to the tooth in comparison to some restorative dental procedures like dental crowns or dental bridges. Permanent veneers are custom-made based on the size and shape of your teeth, your bite, etc. They are fused to the surface of the tooth via dental bonding and replace the front-facing side of a tooth long-term. They can last up to ten years as long as they are correctly taken care of. That said, they may need to be replaced over time, especially if there is decay to the tooth underneath the veneer.
